Making Movies Remix Assignment: A So-Called Remix

Artist’s Statement:

What do Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”, The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”,  and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” have in common? Other than being radio hits, they have all been accused of blatant property theft. “Rip-offs” in the music industry is nothing new. This film, A So-Called Remix, deals with two phenomenons that should be addressed. The first is when an “artist” uses an established melody to create their own songs, and benefit from other people’s work. Many times, these cases end up in court. The other trend is when an artist, like Flo Rida, samples another song. The incredibly catchy “Good Feeling” samples “Levels”, which in turn, sampled “Something’s Got A Hold Of Me”. As a result, a well-established pop star makes more money, and gets more recognition, than the original artist. In A So-Called Remix, I grabbed the instrumentation of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face and added the vocals from an acapella song. I merged the two songs, purposely using a song that younger viewers will recognize. When you hear the song start, you should have the reaction, “I know this song”. When the singing enters, you should think, “that doesn’t sound right”. That’s the purpose of this film.

The audio isn’t the only element used to portray this message. The video depicts people dancing at a nightclub. Many songs at clubs are remixs, and are played by DJs who do little to make their own music and sound. It is so natural to hear this type of music in a nightclub. Then, during the chorus (the most recognizable part of any song), it cuts to a 1930s club. Women are dancing, and it doesn’t fit the tone of the song at all. This is representing the “original”, and how it has been distorted and misused.
